State Rep. Doug Wozniak this week voted to get money out of politics by blocking state-regulated utilities and companies with major government contracts from donating to political campaigns and candidates.

The state House approved the Michiganders for Money Out of Politics (MMOP) citizen-initiated proposal after more than half a million Michigan residents signed petitions supporting the effort.

“People should have a stronger voice in their government than corporations with deep pockets,” said Wozniak (R-Shelby Township). “More than half a million Michiganders made their voices heard on this issue, and I was proud to stand with them. This is about putting the people we represent first, not powerful special interests.”

The citizen-initiated proposal still needs to be approved by the state Senate, which did not hold session this week. The proposal must be approved in the coming days, or it will be placed before Michigan voters in the November election.
